i walk these streets with a song in my head
I had to wake up at 8:30 yesterday (WHICH WAS A SATURDAY, IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW. And if you're unaware of when Saturday is, here is a link that can help you) to go to Providence (AN HOUR AWAY) for an art field trip to RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) museum.

AH HAH BUT I HAVE TRICKED YOU. Because it was not the downer I expected it to be, it was actually a fantabulous time! The weather was sheer perfection, that part of Providence is pretty much the most beautiful part of the city, and the RISD kids had an entire part of the street blocked off and were selling artwork and jewelery and shirts and pottery and all the kind of shit you expect art students to be making. (I found pictures of it on flickr! So freaking creative.) I wish I'd had money to spend, they were selling some awesome stuff. God, I wish I had any artistic talent at all. Seeing a school like that, the energy and the creativity? It makes me really, really dislike Salve. The classes I take are great, but there's no sense of community. None at all.

It also made me miss Providence. That city will always own a piece of my heart. My grandparents constantly talk about how glad they are that my dad and I are out of there, because Providence is just so dirty and dangerous. You know, because it's a city, and therefore not just filled with white people. Which is fucking stupid. My city is gorgeous and lively and diverse and I'd rather live there than the suburbs any day.

No one else in the world cares about this, but I'm picspamming Providence. Because I can. I stole all of these pictures from the internet, I don't have any of these photography skillz.

This is Providence. This is the city I lived in for about fourteen years of my life.

This is the Providence Performing Arts Center.

The interior is one of the most beautiful things you'll ever see.

The Big Blue Bug. I don't see him much anymore, living in Newport just doesn't take me along that highway stretch often.

Waterfire, which everyone should experience. It's just lovely.

It's not all beautiful, of course. It's a city. There's graffiti...

It's run down...

It's broken.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

all I ask is that you'll be there when I return

I love when people are so aware of the beauty of diversity. The first thing you hear me gush about the bay area and why I think I'm so lucky to have grown up here is because of how diverse it is! I wish everyone could realize how much life there is when every corner you turn you meet someone who is nothing like you. It's a beautiful thing, really.

And all that art?! Too pretty for words. I'm glad your early Saturday morning turned out to be awesome :P

Exactly. There were three years in my life I spent living with my grandparents in the suburbs and the thing I hated most was how much everything and everyone looked just the same. How are you supposed to learn anything living there? I love walking downtown in Providence and hearing the street musicians and feeling like you're part of something.

I loved it. I completely forgot to talk about the museum itself in all the city love, so I'll probably end up posting about that later. THEY HAVE A NINE FOOT TALL BUDDHA STATUE OKAY AND IT IS SO WORTH TALKING ABOUT.

It honestly may have been my favorite picspam to make. IT'S ALL THESE PLACES I'VE BEEN SO MANY TIMES AND THEY'RE JUST SO BEAUTIFUL. I don't know if anyone really realizes how wonderful Providence is.

YES YES YES. I never feel so alive or inspired as when I'm in my city. Random art on the streets! What's better than that?

This makes me wonder if there are any good pictures of Richmond out there. I think most of Richmond is gross, but some of the houses are cute on the outside.

Diversity? In Richmond, being white means you are in the minority... haha.

The high school I wound up in had about ten white kids in it, give or take. I really feel at home in a place like that, which is weird, because I'm the whitest white girl ever. But it's what I'm used to, what I grew up in. Being in a predominately white, rich college now is bizarre. It feels like everyone's the same. DIVERSITY YAY, BASICALLY.

I've only been to Providence once (visiting Brown), but these photos make me remember it in a completely different way and I really want to go back now.

:]

I think the brokendownness of a city adds to the beauty; I sort of love graffiti. I'm glad you love it flaws and all.

I gasped when I saw the library in the State House and wanted to watch Beauty and the Beast [it reminds me of the Beast's library, a little, idk?].

Glad the art thing was fun!
